Launching a new product with marketplace ads: a practical plan

A new listing has no sales history, so marketplaces have little reason to show it. Ads give it the first traffic it needs. The goal of launch advertising is learning and momentum — profit comes after.

Three-phase ad launch plan: collect data, refine, optimise for profit
Launch advertising in three phases.

Before you spend anything

Make sure the listing is ready: strong images, complete copy, competitive price and enough stock. Ads only amplify what is already there. Sending paid traffic to a weak listing is the fastest way to waste a budget.

Week 1–2: collect data

  • Run an automatic campaign to discover how the marketplace matches your product.
  • Run a manual campaign on your most relevant keywords.
  • Set a daily budget you are comfortable spending for learning.

Week 3–4: refine

Look at the search terms report. Move terms that convert into exact-match campaigns, add irrelevant terms as negatives, and lower bids on keywords that spend without sales.

After the first month: optimise for profit

Once organic sales grow, shift focus to efficiency. Know your break-even advertising cost for each product, and adjust bids so ads support profit rather than just revenue.

What to watch weekly

  • Spend, sales and cost of sale per campaign.
  • Click-through rate (is the main image and title working?).
  • Conversion rate (is the listing convincing?).
  • Organic rank for your main keywords.

Advertising is not a switch you flip. It is a weekly habit. Small, regular adjustments beat big, occasional changes every time.
